How the fence cost is worked out
Cost = fence length × installed price per linear foot
+ gates × price per gate
Example: 150 ft of 6 ft wood privacy fence, no gates.
- 150 ft × $35 = $5,250, within a national range of $3,000 to $7,500
- Materials alone: $1,050 to $4,500 at $7 to $30 per linear foot
What moves the price
- Material. Chain link is the cheapest; wood privacy and vinyl cost about twice as much or more per foot.
- Height. HomeGuide prices an 8 ft privacy fence at $50 to $85 per linear foot, against $25 to $60 for 6 ft.
- Gates. Each gate is priced on its own; double drive gates cost much more than a walk-through gate.
- Removing an old fence. $3 to $5 per linear foot for chain link and $10 to $20 for wood (HomeGuide).
- Where you live. Fixr finds labor accounts for about 50% of a wood fence’s total, and labor rates vary by region.
