How the tile cost is worked out
Floor area = length × width
Cost = floor area × installed price per sq ft
Example: a 10 × 12 ft kitchen floor in 12 × 12 in tile, laid straight.
- Floor: 10 × 12 = 120 sq ft
- At a typical $16.75 per sq ft: $2,010, within $480 to $4,680
- Labor alone: $360 to $1,800 at $3 to $15 per sq ft
- Tile to buy: 120 sq ft + 10% = 132 sq ft, or 130 tiles with 1/8 in joints
What moves the price
- Tile size. Fixr puts labor for 8 to 14 in tiles at about $7 to $9 per square foot and large-format tile at $10 to $12 or more.
- Pattern. Diagonal, herringbone and other patterns take longer to lay and need more tile; Fixr says elaborate patterns add 10% to 20%.
- The tile itself. Fixr puts tile at $1 to $200 per square foot depending on the material, so a premium tile can cost more than the labor.
- Preparation. Ask whether tearing out the old floor and leveling the subfloor are in the quote.
- Where you live. Labor rates vary by region.
