Cost estimate

per sq ft

New asphalt shingle roof: $6,708 (range $5,367 to $10,733)

Typical US price $4 to $8 per sq ft (HomeGuide, Fixr, This Old House, October 2026). Tear-off, steep or complex roofs cost more.

per bundle

Shingles: $1,935 for 45 bundles

Typical US price $35 to $55 per bundle (Home Depot, October 2026).

How it's calculated
  1. Footprint: 40 ft × 30 ft = 1,200 sq ft
  2. Pitch 6/12 adds slope: √(1 + (6 ÷ 12)²) = 1.118
  3. Roof area: 1,200 sq ft × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft = 13.4 squares
  4. Add 10% for cuts: 14.8 squares × 3 bundles = 45 bundles (rounded up)
  5. Eaves 80 ft, rakes 67.1 ft, ridge 40 ft

Estimates use manufacturer data sheets and industry guides (sources). Check local codes and your supplier's figures before you order.

How to use the roofing calculator

  1. Pick a gable roof (two slopes ending in triangular walls) or a hip roof (four slopes).
  2. Measure the house length and width at ground level and add the roof overhang on each side.
  3. Choose the pitch: the inches the roof rises for every 12 inches it runs. It's often written on plans as 6/12.
  4. Check the waste allowance, then read the squares, bundles and other materials.
  5. Adjust the installed price per square foot to compare with quotes you get.

How to calculate roofing squares

Roofing is measured in squares. One square is 100 square feet of roof surface. The calculation has three steps:

  1. Footprint. Multiply the length and width of the house, measured at the outside walls, plus the overhang on each side.
  2. Slope. Multiply the footprint by the pitch factor to get the real roof area.
  3. Squares. Divide the roof area by 100, then add a waste allowance for cut shingles.
Roofing calculator measurements: a gable roof and a hip roof seen from above, with the house length and width measured across the outside walls plus the overhang on each side, and a side view showing a roof pitch of 6 in of rise per 12 in of run (6/12).
Where to measure: the house length and width at the outside walls, plus the overhang on each side. Pitch is the rise in inches for every 12 in of level run.

Roof area = length × width × √(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)

Example: a 40 × 30 ft gable roof, overhangs included, at a 6/12 pitch. The footprint is 1,200 sq ft. The pitch factor is 1.118, so the roof is 1,342 sq ft, or 13.4 squares. With 10% waste that’s 14.8 squares, and at 3 bundles per square, 45 bundles of shingles.

Pitch factors

Pitch Angle Multiply footprint by
3/12 14.0° 1.031
4/12 18.4° 1.054
5/12 22.6° 1.083
6/12 26.6° 1.118
7/12 30.3° 1.158
8/12 33.7° 1.202
9/12 36.9° 1.250
10/12 39.8° 1.302
12/12 45.0° 1.414

Don’t know your pitch? The roof pitch calculator works it out from a rise and run or an angle, and shows which roof coverings the code allows at it.

Everything else on the roof

Shingles are only part of the order. The calculator also works out:

  • Starter strip along the eaves and rakes, at about 100 linear feet per bundle (Owens Corning; GAF and CertainTeed bundles cover 116 to 120 ft).
  • Hip and ridge caps at about 25 linear feet per bundle, the GAF Seal-A-Ridge figure. CertainTeed and Owens Corning caps cover 30 and 33 ft.
  • Underlayment by the roll: a #15 felt roll covers 400 sq ft, #30 felt 204 sq ft, and a 10-square synthetic roll about 930 sq ft after laps.
  • Drip edge, the metal edging along the eaves and rakes, as a total length.
  • Nails, at four per shingle.

The hip roof option assumes a rectangular house with the same pitch on all four sides, so its ridge is the length minus the width. For L-shaped houses, dormers or several roof sections, calculate each rectangle on its own and add them up, and allow more waste for the valleys.

For the walls under the roof, the siding calculator adds the gable triangles to the wall area.

For the full price of a new roof, tear-off included, the roof replacement cost calculator works from the same measurements.

Questions and answers

How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

Three bundles for most asphalt shingles. GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration are packed 3 bundles per square, and CertainTeed Landmark is sold at 33.3 sq ft per bundle, which is also 3 per square. A square covers 100 square feet of roof. Check the wrapper of the product you buy.

How does the pitch change the roof area?

A sloped roof has more surface than the ground it covers. Multiply the footprint by √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²): 1.054 for a 4/12 pitch, 1.118 for 6/12, 1.202 for 8/12 and 1.414 for 12/12.

How much waste should I add for shingles?

Contractors typically add 10 to 15% on simple gable roofs (EagleView) and 15 to 20% on complex roofs with valleys and dormers (This Old House). The calculator uses 10% for gable and 15% for hip roofs, and you can change it.

How much does a new roof cost?

About $4 to $8 per square foot installed for asphalt shingles, or $400 to $800 per square. Fixr's 2026 average is $4.75 per square foot and This Old House's $5.16, and HomeGuide puts architectural shingles at $400 to $600 per square. Tear-off, steep pitches and complex shapes push the price up. HomeGuide puts metal roofs at $5 to $16 per square foot.

How many nails do I need per square?

Four nails per shingle is the standard pattern, according to GAF. With 64 architectural shingles per square that's 256 nails per square. High-wind areas and steep roofs use six nails per shingle.

How do I measure a roof without climbing on it?

Measure the outside walls of the house, add the overhang on each side, and use the pitch to account for the slope. That's how this calculator works. Plans, a pitch gauge from a ladder at the eave, or a roofer's measurement report are other ways to get the pitch.

How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 2,000 sq ft roof?

2,000 sq ft of roof surface is 20 squares. At 3 bundles per square that's 60 bundles, or 66 with 10% waste. If 2,000 sq ft is the house's floor area, measure the footprint and pitch instead: the roof area depends on those and on the overhangs.

How much does a 1,000 sq ft roof cost?

About $4,000 to $8,000 for asphalt shingles at $4 to $8 per square foot installed, or around $5,000 at a typical $5. Tear-off, steep pitches and complex shapes cost more.
