How to convert square feet to acres
An acre is 43,560 square feet, so the conversion is one division:
Acres = square feet ÷ 43,560
Example: a lot 100 ft wide and 200 ft deep is 100 × 200 = 20,000 sq ft. 20,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.4591 acres, a little less than half an acre. In metric that’s 20,000 × 0.09290304 = 1,858 m², or 0.1858 hectares.
To go the other way, multiply acres by 43,560: 2.5 acres is 108,900 sq ft.
Area conversions
| 1 unit | Square feet | Acres |
|---|---|---|
| Square yard | 9 | 0.000207 |
| Square meter | 10.764 | 0.000247 |
| Acre | 43,560 | 1 |
| Hectare | 107,639 | 2.471 |
| Square mile | 27,878,400 | 640 |
The foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m², and a hectare is 10,000 m². These are the definitions in NIST Handbook 44.
How big is an acre?
An acre can be any shape. If it were square, these would be the sides:
| Area | Square feet | Side of a square |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 acre | 10,890 | 104.4 ft |
| 1/2 acre | 21,780 | 147.6 ft |
| 1 acre | 43,560 | 208.7 ft |
| 2 acres | 87,120 | 295.2 ft |
| 5 acres | 217,800 | 466.7 ft |
| 10 acres | 435,600 | 660 ft |
Measuring a lot
If you have a survey or plat, use the area printed on it. If you measure the lot yourself, split it into rectangles and triangles, work out each piece in the square footage calculator, add them up and divide by 43,560. A triangle’s area is half its base times its height, measured at right angles to the base.
