Installed cost

per sq ft

Paver patio: $1,620 (range $960 to $3,000)

Typical US price $8 to $25 per sq ft (HomeGuide, HomeAdvisor, LawnLove, October 2026). Concrete or brick pavers; natural stone costs more (HomeGuide).

How it's calculated
  1. Area: 120 sq ft; one paver covers 0.22 sq ft (4.5 pavers per sq ft)
  2. 120 sq ft + 10% ÷ 0.22 sq ft = 594 pavers (rounded up)
  3. Base: 120 sq ft × 4 in, plus 15% because loose stone compacts = 1.7 cu yd ≈ 2.39 tons
  4. Bedding sand: 1 in (25 mm) over the whole area = 0.5 tons

Estimates use manufacturer data sheets and industry guides (sources). Check local codes and your supplier's figures before you order.

How to use the paver calculator

  1. Choose a patio or walkway, or a driveway. Driveways get a thicker base.
  2. Pick the shape and enter the size of the area, or choose Known area to type the square footage.
  3. Choose the paver size, or type your own.
  4. Read the number of pavers and the base gravel, bedding sand, joint sand and edging to buy.

How to calculate pavers

Pavers = area × (1 + extra %) ÷ (paver length × paver width ÷ 144)

Example: a 12 × 10 ft patio is 120 sq ft. A 4 × 8 in paver covers 32 square inches, or 0.222 sq ft, so the patio needs 540 pavers, or 594 with 10% extra for cuts. Home Depot suggests ordering 5 to 10% more material than the measured area.

What goes under the pavers

A paver patio is a layered system. The paver industry’s construction guide (CMHA Tech Note PAV-TEC-002-22) calls for:

Layer Patio or walkway Driveway
Pavers 2 3/8 in (60 mm) thick 2 3/8 in (60 mm) thick
Bedding sand, screeded, not compacted 1 in (25 mm) 1 in (25 mm)
Crushed stone base, compacted At least 4 in (100 mm) At least 6 in (150 mm)

The calculator adds 15% to the base because loose crushed stone packs down: Caterpillar’s tables put dry gravel about 12% heavier in the ground (bank) than loose, and the calculator rounds that up. It converts the base and sand to tons at about 1.4 and 1.35 tons per cubic yard.

Example, continued: the 120 sq ft patio needs 120 × 4 ÷ 12 = 40 cubic feet of compacted base, so about 46 cubic feet (1.7 cubic yards, 2.4 tons) of loose crushed stone, plus 10 cubic feet (0.5 tons) of bedding sand and 2 bags of polymeric joint sand.

Pavers per square foot

Paver size Per sq ft Per m²
4 × 8 in (100 × 200 mm) 4.5 48.4
6 × 6 in 4 43.1
6 × 9 in 2.67 28.7
12 × 12 in 1 10.8
16 × 16 in 0.56 6.1
24 × 24 in 0.25 2.7

Pavers sold in metric sizes or with spacer nibs cover a slightly different area; most packaging states the coverage per pallet or per square foot, so check it against the result.

Edges

Open edges that aren’t held by a wall or a building need an edge restraint to keep the pavers from spreading. The calculator gives the perimeter of the area as a starting point for ordering it.

For a poured patio instead, use the concrete calculator; for a gravel path, the gravel calculator; for an asphalt driveway, the asphalt calculator.

Questions and answers

How many pavers do I need per square foot?

4.5 for 4 × 8 in pavers, 4 for 6 × 6 in, 2.67 for 6 × 9 in and 1 for 12 × 12 in. Divide 144 by the paver's length times width in inches.

How thick should the base be under pavers?

At least 4 inches of compacted crushed stone for patios and walkways, and at least 6 inches for residential driveways, according to the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association (formerly ICPI). Cold climates, wet or weak soils need a thicker base.

How much sand do I need under pavers?

A 1 inch layer of bedding sand, screeded but not compacted (CMHA). That's about 0.31 cubic yards, or a little over 0.4 tons, per 100 square feet.

How much polymeric sand do I need?

A 50 lb bag of Alliance Gator Maxx Bond G2 covers about 65 to 85 square feet with narrow joints and 2 3/8 in thick pavers, and much less with wide joints. The calculator assumes 75 square feet per bag.

How much does a paver patio cost?

Typically $8 to $25 per square foot installed: HomeAdvisor gives $8 to $25 and LawnLove $8 to $24. HomeGuide puts a brick or concrete paver patio at $10 to $17, with natural stone above.

How much does a 20 × 20 paver patio cost?

400 sq ft at $8 to $25 per square foot installed comes to about $3,200 to $10,000, or about $5,400 at a typical $13.50.

How many pavers do I need for a 12 × 12 patio?

With 4 × 8 in pavers (0.22 sq ft each), 144 sq ft takes 648 pavers, or 713 with 10% extra for cuts. Larger 12 × 12 in pavers need 144, or 159 with the extra.
